The Sunshine #7-6 Dec/Jan 2016

“Happiness is like the old man told me
Look for it, and you’ll never find it all
But let it go, live your life and leave it
Then one day, you’ll wake up and she’ll be home”

‘Happiness’, written by Isaac Slade of The Fray, is the last song on the second studio album from the band titled ‘The Fray’, released on February 3, 2009. You can listen to the song on video here>>

In the typical style of the band, this song is soft and mellow and poetic, with gentle guitar work that builds to a crescendo. Rumor has it Slade wrote the song while his wife was away on a trip, and he was missing her and feeling unhappy.

The message he penned out is inspired and clear. Happiness can be fleeting, can even “feel a lot like sorrow”, like when your loved one, and the happiness you feel when they are near, is far away. You can focus on it, dwell on whether you are happy or not, but that may even “break your faith to pieces”. So what answer to this dilemma does he suggest? “Let it go. Live your life.”

So don’t go longing for and searching out happiness, just stay busy, be productive, and “one day you’ll wake up and she’ll be home.” Happiness will knock “on your door, and you just let it in.”
